Talavera               vs           Imitation Talavera

bullet

Produced in Puebla by authorized workshops.

bullet

Hand-formed, hand-thrown using clay from the Talavera region.

bullet

Hand painted with mineral pigments prepared by each workshop.

bullet

Base glaze is an off-white cream color, porous and with speckles.

bullet

The glaze has some crazing.

bullet

Must contain a minimum amount of lead. (That is why the plates we offer are only for decorative purposes).

bullet

The glaze has a crystalline quality. It seems as though you can see through the glaze and look at the design and colors.

bullet

Detailed, careful painting and attention to design.

bullet

Great craftsmanship, although it has irregularities due to the fact that it is handmade and painted..

bullet

The price reflects the quality and time dedicated to each piece of pottery.

  • Produced out of Puebla, or in Puebla by an unauthorized workshop that does not follow the Official Norm for Talavera.

  • Poured clay (some times it isn't even a clay product ).

  • Almost completely machine produced.

  • Use of decals and transfers instead of hand painting.

  • Use of commercial paints instead of traditional "handmade" mineral pigments. Unusual colors.

  • White glaze base.

  • Unleaded.

  • Glaze does not present crazing.

  • The glaze and colors although bright are not crystalline. It looks flat, bi-dimensional.

  • Poor quality painting. Flat.

  • Poor quality reflected on price: Cheap, Cheap Cheap!
